JC Seismic Monitoring Group (X005) is an Enrichment Programme Unit for students who are interested in Earth Sciences, in particular: Geophysics, Seismology (Study of Earthquakes), Interior of the Earth Theories, Plate Tectonics, Maltese Seismic History and Seismic Data Analysis.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this unit, students should be able to:
- explain basic aspects of seismology using basic physics phenomena
- recognise and analyse seismic data and find the epicentre of an earthquake
- understand how the interior of the earth is made up using observations from seismic data
- understand how plate tectonics shape the surface of the earth
- discuss various aspects of seismic hazard and seismic engineering
- construct a simple seismometer.
-
21st century skills addressed in the unit:
- Numeracy
- Scientific literacy
- ICT literacy
