FAQ for Classical Studies

Are you a Percy Jackson fan? Do you spend way too many hours analysing ancient battle tactics? Do you like languages, literature and art? Then this is the course for you! In a nutshell, it’s about the ancient world. Therefore, if you want a better understanding of why the western world behaves the way it does, choose Classical Studies. The Classical Studies syllabus is broad and offers just enough detail to whet appetites. It provides a solid foundation for whatever studies students wish to embark on. 

Some concerns you might have.

Knowledge of Classical Mythology will definitely work in your favour. However, this course will shed a new light on mythology and explore its wider context. 
Yes, this course exposes you to Ancient Greek. Rest assured that Greek is not as tough as you think. Moreover, the language component is a small one. You’d be surprised to learn how many students ended up loving Greek most of all. 
The Classics might have been created by some dead white men, however it is a culture which was influenced by other civilisations and which is definitely open to everyone. 
You’re at least 16 by now. Time to try new things. You might find out that while History is not your favourite subject, learning about wars which happened in the past offers you a better understanding of the present. 
  • Manwel Dimech - Maltese socialist - In a letter from prison in Egypt he mentions that his son wants him to return to Malta so that Dimech may teach him Latin.
  • Karl Heinrich Ulrichs - German 19th century lawyer and one of the first to publicly speak about Gay Rights.
  • Karl Marx - The philosopher wrote his doctoral dissertation on Democritean and Epicurean philosophy.
  • Mark Zuckerberg - Facebook founder, and billionaire. He also studied Latin and Ancient Greek for many years.
  • J.K. Rowling - anyone who has read the Harry Potter series can immediately pick up all the references to classical mythology.
  • Frank Lampard - Chelsea footballer and student of Latin.

Some technical aspects.

Classical Studies is only offered at Intermediate level from MATSEC and as a consequence we only offer it at intermediate level.
