300 million people around the world speak Russian, 160 million of whom consider it to be their native language. Studying Russian encourages you to further develop your linguistic and expressive skills in order to speak and write fluently. The language is interesting and engaging, and when studying it, you will be encouraged to explore different aspects of Russia which is home to some of the world’s finest traditions in the arts.
This course requires previous knowledge of the Russian at SEC level. Its aim is to consolidate this knowledge and to extend it to include more advanced concepts which are dealt with in a broad manner. The language component of the course aims at developing your skills in summary and essay writing. Great importance is given to developing oral and reading skills and revision of grammar. Aspects of Russian culture are also studied. You will read, discuss, and analyse a set of literary works, including works of Anton Chekov.
A pass in Russian at SEC level is recommended to study this subject.
Russian at Advanced level aims at developing further your language abilities in Russian. It is designed to extend your knowledge of grammar as well as to give you practice in listening, speaking, writing and reading comprehension. A literature component is also introduced at this level. You will read and analyse a number of short classical Russian texts, including works by Anton Chekov and Alexander Pushkin. In addition, you will be expected to study some literary criticism and apply it while writing essays.
A pass in Russian at SEC level is highly recommended to study the subject further.
