Advanced level

Lectures: 4 hours per week
Tutorials: 1 hour per week

Intermediate level

Latin is offered at both Advanced and Intermediate levels.

Latin provides the key to the Romance languages, Spanish, French, Italian, etc. Latin is the universal language of western civilization and will provide the blueprint for any language you may be learning later on in life. Studying Latin will also provide you with further language skills and will allow you to engage in interesting discussions about the culture and civilisation of Classical Rome. 

The Intermediate Level Course

Latin at Intermediate level will help you familiarise yourself with the language of Classical Rome through grammar, writing, reading and interpretation. You will also have the opportunity to study great authors like Virgil, Cicero and Livy. Ultimately, these texts will give you the skills of reading these authors in the original with a better understanding of the wonderful world and mind of Ancient Rome and its people.

A pass in Latin at SEC level is recommended to study this subject.

The Advanced Level Course

Latin at Advanced level is a thorough study of the language in all its various forms, from grammar to literature.  At this level, Latin will introduce you to the language of Ancient Rome. You will have the opportunity to study some of the giants of world literature including Virgil, Cicero, Horace and Livy. The course is designed to give you a thorough grounding in Latin grammar and syntax so you can understand and translate passages of Latin prose and verse into English and translate simple English prose into Latin. 

 A pass in Latin at SEC level is highly recommended to study the subject further.
