Prof. Andrew Azzopardi, Dean of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing and Head of the Department of Youth and Community Studies, University of Malta.

Expertise: Inclusive Education, Sociology, Critical Pedagogy, Disability Politics, Youth and Community Studies.

Prof. Andrew Azzopardi is Dean of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing and Head of the Department of Youth and Community Studies. His lecturing and research focus on inclusive education, sociology, critical pedagogy, disability politics, youth and community studies. He is a Member of the Editorial Panel of the highly acclaimed International Journal of Inclusive Education and has edited a special edition called Creating Inclusive Communities. He has contributed extensively in a number of other applauded journals. Azzopardi has published the following texts amongst other; Understanding disability politics in Malta (2009), Young People in Gozo – A study 2 (2011) and Roots to Inclusive Education – A Question of Wellbeing (2012). He is the co-Editor of Inclusive communities: A critical reader (2012). Azzopardi has also edited Youth: Responding to lives - An international reader (2013) and Perspectives on Wellbeing - A Reader (2019) 


Prof. Sandro Caruana, Faculty of Education, University of Malta

Expertise: Education

Sandro Caruana, is Professor of Italian Language Teaching Methodology. He was Dean of the Faculty of Education and is a member of the Dept. of Languages & Humanities in Education. He holds courses on Italian language teaching and learning, Italian Linguistics, Sociolinguistics and on intercultural communication. His other areas of interest include multilingualism, language attitudes, second language acquisition and the Romance element in Maltese. He has participated in international projects on intercultural communication and on language teaching, presented his works at several international conferences and was invited as keynote speaker on a number of occasions.

Mr James Catania, CEO Intelliblock

Expertise: Blockchain Technology

James Catania is a software engineer by profession, however, he has been in the IT industry for over 20 years. Starting programming at the age of 10 with BASIC and an AMIGA 500, James was one of Malta’s Internet pioneers having the second Maltese internet site in 1994 and continued to study and developing e-business and e-commerce applications throughout his career. After working directly for IBM, Walmart, HP, Patek Phillipe, Rolex and the United Nations just to name a few, in 2004 James held the position of CEO for two international companies with offices in Malta, Libya, Tunisia, Canada and Holland. James is also Malta’s leading expert in Defence and Security software, robotics and blockchain.

James holds two Masters degrees (both with distinction) one in Business Administration for Information Systems and the other a Master’s of Science in Computer Science. Currently, James Catania is the CEO and lead technical consultant for Intelliblock, the premiere business blockchain solutions provider for the European market with several successful ICOs and certified blockchain developers, Intelliblock is placed at the top for proven blockchain solutions. James holds two Masters degrees one in management of information systems and another in computer science.

James’ work has been cited by European Schoolnet and the European Commission.

Dr Baohua Gu, Corporate Fellow, Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Expertise: Environmental Science and Technology

Dr Baohua Gu is a Corporate Fellow and Team Leader in Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, with a joint appointment as a Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is also a fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a fellow of Geological Society of America (GSA), and an author of more than 250 journal publications, books or book chapters. Dr Gu received his Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley, and his research expertise includes biogeochemical transformation and transport of environmental pollutants, such as mercury, pyrotechnics (perchlorate), uranium, chlorinated organic compounds, and soil organic carbon degradation and climate feedbacks. He currently serves as a regional editor for Environmental Engineering Science and as an advisor or a reviewer for many environmental research programs for academia, governments, and elsewhere.

Dr Maurizio Indirli, Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development

Expertise: Seismology and Structural Assessment

Dr Maurizio Indirli has penned more than 130 publications and holds a Ph.D. (Univ. of Trento) in Structural Engineering. He currently works at ENEA (Italian National Agency for New technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development) and his responsabilities include the prevention of natural catastrophes, structural engineering, antiseismic innovative techniques, improvement of industrial plants, strategic construction/infrastructure, residential housing, and cultural heritage. He was responsible for many projects regarding antiseismic improvement and archaeological heritage and has partecipated in several in situ investigations immediately after all the greatest seismic events in Italy (Reggio Emilia-Modena,1996; Umbria-Marche, 1997/1998; Molise, 2002/2003; Abruzzo, 2009; Emilia-Romagna, 2012) and around the world (Northridge 1994, California, USA, European team EEFIT-Earthquake Engineering Investigation Team; Kobe 1995, Japan, Italian Government team; Chile 2010, Italian and EU COST C26 team).

Prof. Tanya Sammut-Bonnici, Pro-Rector, Strategic Planning and Enterprise, University of Malta

Expertise: Economics, Management and Accountancy

Professor Tanya Sammut-Bonnici is Pro-Rector Strategic Planning and Enterprise at the University of Malta, and Joint Editor of the Wiley Encyclopedia of Strategic Management. Professor Sammut-Bonnici has held managerial and executive posts at ST Microelectronics, Vodafone, Melita Communications and APS Bank, as well as directorships in the finance, security, employment and education sectors.

Professor Sammut-Bonnici's contribution to academia lies in Strategic Management, Innovation Management and the Network Economy. Her research is published in the International Journal of Management Reviews, European Business Journal, Encyclopedia of International Management, Encyclopedia of Marketing Management, as well as leading textbooks including Strategy Analysis and Practice, and Dynamics of International Strategy. Professor Sammut-Bonnici received the honorary title of Associate Fellow at Warwick Business School, University of Warwick, UK and has acted as Guest Editor of the Management Research Review.

Amazon, BT, eBay, Google, IBM, Reed Elsevier, SAS, Telenor, Time Warner, and Yahoo are some of the international corporations that have collaborated in Professor Sammut-Bonnici’s research projects. Professor Sammut-Bonnici is a founding member of the Partnership Development Forum, which brought together strategy directors from IBM, Ericsson, Motorola, Marconi, Nortel Networks and Nokia in the United Kingdom.

Professor Sammut-Bonnici has acted as advisor to the EU Parliamentary Committee on Industry Research and Energy (ITRE) and the EU Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO), on an initiative which led to the harmonisation of roaming charges across Europe.
