Dr William Zammit

Lecturer

I lecture Systems of Knowledge at the University of Malta Junior College, as well as Early-Modern Maltese and European History credits within the History Department of the University of Malta. I also lecture in the BA Libraries and Archives programme at the same university, giving modules on archivistics and on Melitensia.

My research interests comprise Early-Modern European and Maltese history, particularly the history of communications and particularly of the role of printing together with a variety of social aspects pertaining to the period.

Qualifications and Unpublished Research

B.Ed. (Hons.) degree, University of Malta (1982-1987). Dissertation entitled ‘Fra Thomas Gargallo, Bishop of Malta (1578-1614): a study of the bishop’s relations with the various authorities in Malta’.

Dip. Lib. Inf. Studies, University of Malta (1986-1988). Dissertation entitled ‘A Bibliography of Works Printed in Malta: 1642-1798’.

MA History, University of Malta (1992-1995), awarded with distinction. Thesis entitled ‘Printing and its Cultural Role in Malta during the Rule of the Order of St John’.

Ph.D, University of Malta (1996-2001). Thesis entitled ‘The Dissemination of Unorthodoxy and new ideas in Malta, 1700-1798’.

Research conducted in Maltese and foreign archives, including the various archival collections in Rome and the Vatican.

Teaching/Lecturing

I have taught History, Geography, Social Studies and European Studies at various secondary-school levels between 1987 and 2004. In 1994 started lecturing at the University of Malta on a visiting basis. In 2004 I was appointed lecturer in Systems of Knowledge at the University of Malta Junior College.

 Academic Interests and Affiliations

My research interests comprise various social aspects pertaining to early-Modern Maltese and European history, Maltese archives, Melitensia and Maltese cartography. I have published over twenty academic papers/books since 1990. I am currently conducted research on Maltese cartography and a major study on Maltese printing activity between 1642 and 1839. I have been Council member of the Malta Historical Society since 1998 and editor of its journal, Melita Historica, since 2000.
