MATHEMATICS
About the Subject

Mathematics is a very vast field which can be defined as a science or a group of related sciences dealing with the logic of quantity, shape and arrangement. At the Junior College, mathematics is divided into TWO main subjects.

These are

PURE MATHEMATICS

and

APPLIED MATHEMATICS

Pure Mathematics is the study of rigorous mathematical arguments using algebraic techniques which will give an insight into major mathematical theories. The syllabus is divided into 4 main areas: Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and Coordinate Geometry.

Applied Mathematics is the mathematical modelling of real world situations. The syllabus is divided into 2 main areas: Statics and Dynamics. Both of them are vector oriented.

The department offers courses for each subject on a two year period at Advanced and Intermediate levels.

At Advanced level the student would be studying various topics on a five-hour basis per week. Other activities include the attendance of one-hour seminar and one-hour tutorial sessions.

At Intermediate level prospective students would be studying topics on a two-hour basis per week. They also have a one-hour tutorial.

At both levels students may attend for contact hours on a one to one basis with their respective tutors. Contact hours provide assistance with specific difficulties met with during the respective course work. In this case it is the student's responsibility to seek assistance from the respective tutor by arranging an appointment for a contact hour.
